Behavior Expectations
Philosophy
Students, families, and school staff share responsibility for creating a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment. Our goal is to help students develop the skills needed to make positive choices, build healthy relationships, and become responsible members of their school community.
Our expectations are guided by the Bluejacket Way and our five core character traits: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Self-Discipline, and Compassion.
Positive Behavior and Discipline
Our schools use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to teach, model, and reinforce positive behavior. Students are recognized for meeting expectations, while inappropriate behavior is addressed through age-appropriate interventions and consequences designed to promote learning and accountability.
Behavior that significantly disrupts learning, creates a safety concern, or violates school expectations may result in an office referral. Examples include repeated disruption, refusal to follow directions, inappropriate language or behavior, physical aggression, bullying, vandalism, or theft. Families will be notified when significant behavior concerns occur, and conferences may be requested as needed.
Student Safety
In accordance with Minnesota law, school staff may use reasonable force when necessary to protect students, staff, or property from harm and to maintain a safe learning environment.
Suspension
Serious violations of school rules may result in suspension in accordance with the Minnesota Pupil Fair Dismissal Act. A conference with school administration may be required before a student returns to school.
Concerns and Grievances
Students and families are encouraged to work directly with school staff to resolve concerns. If a concern cannot be resolved, it may be submitted to the principal, superintendent, and ultimately the School Board following district procedures.
